Online tools can make tasks such as converting files, resizing images and calculating values much faster. Before using any tool, it is worth checking what information you are providing and whether the website is appropriate for that data.

Avoid uploading passwords, one-time passwords, private keys, payment credentials or other highly sensitive information to general-purpose tools. For documents containing personal or confidential data, review the service's privacy information and consider whether local software would be more appropriate.

Check that you are on the intended website before uploading a file. Look carefully at the domain name, especially when you arrived through an advertisement, message or shortened link.

After processing a file, open the result and verify that it works as expected. Keep the original until you are certain the new version is correct.

Keep your browser and operating system updated. Be cautious if a website unexpectedly asks you to install software, browser extensions or unrelated applications.

Convenience and safety can work together. A few basic checks before uploading, processing and downloading files can reduce avoidable problems.
