A meta description is a short summary that can help search engines and users understand what a web page is about. Search engines may use it in search results, although they can also generate a different snippet based on the query.

Write the description for the specific page rather than using the same text across many URLs. Explain the main benefit or information available on the page in natural language. Important words related to the topic can be included where they make sense, but avoid repetitive keyword stuffing.

A useful description should match the actual content. Misleading promises may attract an initial click but create a poor experience when the page does not deliver what the snippet suggested.

Keep the most meaningful information near the beginning. Different devices and search results can display different amounts of text, so there is no guaranteed visible length.

For tool pages, explain what the tool does. For guides, summarize what the reader will learn. For forms or reference pages, describe the specific information available.

Meta descriptions are only one part of SEO. Helpful content, descriptive titles, crawlable pages, internal links and good technical performance are also important for building useful search experiences.
