Meta and North America's Building Trades Unions have announced a new partnership aimed at supporting skilled-trades workers involved in the construction of AI infrastructure.

The partnership was highlighted by Meta on August 12 as demand for large-scale data centers and computing infrastructure continues to grow. Modern AI systems require significant physical infrastructure, including electrical systems, cooling, networking, construction and maintenance.

This matters because public discussion about AI often focuses on software engineers and researchers. But the physical expansion of AI also depends on electricians, technicians, construction workers, HVAC specialists and other skilled roles.

For students and workers, the useful takeaway is to look beyond job titles that explicitly contain the word AI. Infrastructure roles may become an important part of the technology workforce as investment continues.
