Artificial intelligence, often shortened to AI, is a broad term for computer systems designed to perform tasks that can involve prediction, pattern recognition, language, images or decision support.
Many AI systems learn patterns from data and use those patterns to produce an output. Examples include spam filters, recommendation systems, speech recognition, translation tools and systems that generate text or images.
AI output is not automatically correct. A system can misunderstand a request, produce outdated information or generate a confident answer that contains errors. Important facts should therefore be checked against reliable sources.
When using AI tools, avoid sharing confidential information unless you understand how the service handles that data. Human review remains important for decisions involving legal, medical, financial or other high-impact matters.
AI can be especially useful for brainstorming, summarizing non-sensitive material, organizing ideas and assisting with repetitive tasks. The quality of the result often depends on the quality of the instructions and the information available to the system.
Understanding both the usefulness and limitations of AI makes it easier to use these tools responsibly and effectively.
